Anchored at the heart of Cape Town’s city centre, the Station Precinct is one of the city’s most critical urban gateways — a space where movement, culture, and public life converge. The design team examined the Station and its surrounding precinct as part of renewed efforts to revitalise this key urban node. The transport-orientated upgrades focused on unlocking opportunities for the station deck and its precinct, seeking to improve and expand deck operations and conditions along.
As part of the multidisciplinary design team, UC explored a series of design scenarios aimed to better serve commuters, focusing on strengthening pedestrian linkages, access as well as the revitalising key public spaces, notably the Grand Parade. These aligned with the station deck’s operational requirements and its vision as a vibrant, commuter-friendly and mixed-use precinct.
Beyond the necessary operational upgrades to the deck, the team expanded its investigations to the scale of surrounding city fabric, identifying strategic upgrades at key areas to critical urban design elements at the ground level (from edge conditions to the interfaces), with a view to promote a robust, integrated pedestrian orientated, inner-city space.
